VIEWING PORTAL
THE VIEWING PORTAL SERIES relies on the use of a magnifying glass to present the artwork to the viewer. The cast aluminum face is the same throughout the series, with the observable content distinguishing one work from another. Constructed from a cast aluminum plaque in which a magnifying glass is inset, this focal point requires the observer to be in close proximity to the piece. The piece shown here is the first in this series.

TITLE: Self-Portrait Of The Artist
The self-portrait shown here represents my role as a laborer in the arts, working many years as an installer and art services provider. The focal point of this work being the picture hanger and supporting wire.
WOODEN PATTERN AND CASTING PROCESS
These images show different views of the wooden pattern and the various steps involved in the sandmolding and metal casting process. The plywood used is made from the poplar tree and is refered to as “lite-ply”. It is fairly soft and can be easily worked and is not splintery.
FINISHED PIECE
After sprue gates were cut off, 1×3 inch extruded aluminum tubes are cut to size and attached with tapped and bolted fasteners. Each tube has a hanging slot cut into it and this allows the piece to be secured with two screws. The wire is present only as a prop to give the appearance that the piece is supported by wire. A carefull application of silicon adhesive is used to secure the magnifying glass in its receptacle.
